Maria Sakkari v Danielle Collins Head to Head

Sakkari Coming off Washington Final

Sakkari hasn’t won a WTA title since 2019. In fact that tournament win at the Rabat Open was her maiden trophy win at this level and while she touched a career-high of world number three, Sakkari has not been able to lift another title.

That’s surprising given that she has made it to eight finals including two on the WTA 1000 circuit. She’s lost seven of them.

The eighth of those finals came last week in Washington where Sakkari shocked Madison Keys and Jessica Pegula on her way to the title-decider round.

There, Sakkari came up against a strong performance off the racquet of Cori Gauff and fell to a disappointingly one-sided straight-set loss.

That being said, it also gives Sakkari some confidence coming into this tournament having otherwise not had the best of a season. Can she now go deep into this WTA 1000 event as well in the run-up to the US Open?

Collins Stuns Svitolina

Elina Svitolina’s road back to competitive tennis after her maternity leave and her stunning on-court comeback have made for compelling and inspiring viewing. And that was the reason why she started off a 3/5 favourite in her opener against Collins.

Collins hasn’t had the best of forms this season coming into this tournament but the manner in which she demolished her opponent seemed like there were no such problems for her the American.

She was on court for a mere hour and 12 minutes as she carved out a 6-2, 6-2 victory, just her 11th of the season. Such have been Collins’ difficulties she was forced to feature in the qualifiers here to make the main draw but with the kind of serving she dished out in her opener, it looked she was back to her best.

Collins faced just two break-points in the encounter, saving both, while she broke Svitolina twice in each set. Where she scored over Svitolina was her second serve, winning 71% of those points as compared to Svitolina’s 35%.

Can she now make things a lot tougher for the in-form Svitolina?

Sakkari v Collins Prediction and Tip

Collins can be expected to put up a strong fight here and while Sakkari still holds the aces, we could see a third set here.
