Fritz In Fine Form

World no. 9 Taylor Fritz has been in sublime form this year and a 41-17 season record is a testament of that.

Seeded no. 8th in the tournament, Fritz had a first round bye and will begin his Canadian Open campaign in the second round on Wednesday.

The 25-year-old has been playing some excellent tennis ever since the tour moved back from grass to hard courts. Fritz won the Atlanta Open title in late July and then reached the semifinal of the Washington Open last week.

The six-time tour level champion, Fritz had also won the Delray Beach Open on hard court this year. Fritz has been particularly good on hard courts and a 25-6 record on the surface is a proof of that.

He has a 2-4 record at the Canadian Open with both his wins coming last year. Can he get his campaign off to a winning start?

Humbert Rallies Past Jarry

Ugo Humbert came back from a set down to register a first round win over Nicolas Jarry on Monday.

The 25-year-old Frenchman, who was forced to withdraw from the Washington Open quarterfinal last week, needed two hours and 25 minutes to beat the Chilean player 4-6, 6-3, 6-4.

Humbert struck eight aces and 34 winners in the match. He also won 80% points on his first serve and saved 3 of 5 break points that he faced. In contrast he had 13 breaking chances and he took three of them to oust the world no. 27.

Currently ranked no. 34th in the world, the left-handed Humbert is coming off three consecutive slid performances. He was a semifinalist in Newport and Atlanta and a quarterfinalist in Washington. He, however, could not take part in the last eight match at the Citi Open citing leg injury.

A three-time tour level champion, Humbert played in three Challenger finals winning two of them. So overall the form is good for the lefty. He could give Fritz a run for his money.

Fritz v Humbert Prediction and Tip

It’s a matchup between two of the most consistent performers this season. Although Humbert found most of his success in lower level tournaments, Fritz has been recording wins with ease at the highest level. Expect a close one with Fritz advancing.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Fritz to win: 1/3
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 23.5 games in the match: 4/5
