Murray won their only meeting in the round of 16 in Newport last year.

World no. 40 Andy Murray overcame a tough start to beat world no. 39 Lorenzo Sonego in the opening round of the Canadian Open.

Although neither player could break the opponent’s serve in the first set, Murray saved two set points in the opening set before going on to dominate the tiebreak and take a one-set-to-love lead.

With the first set in the bag, Murray then bagelled the Italian to complete a 7-6 (7-3), 6-0 victory.

The 36-year-old 46-time tour level champion, improved his season record to 11-11 on the tour. HIs best on the tour was a runner-up finish in Doha this year.

Overall, the Scot is 26-13 this year thanks to three Challenger titles this season.

Murray has a wonderful 27-7 record at the Canadian Masters, which includes three titles that he won in 2009, 2010 and 2015.

After a promising start in this year’s tournament, he will be hoping for a long run.

Purcell Adds to Auger-Aliassime’s Woes

Qualifier Max Purcell continued his strong run with a straight sets win over local favourite Felix Auger-Aliassime in the first round of the Canadian Open.

The world no. 78, who has displayed terrific form at the Challenger level this year, needed just an hour and 35 minutes to beat the 10th seed 6-4, 6-4.

Purcell did not face a break point in the match while he converted half of the four he held to extend Auger-Aliassime’s losing streak to four matches. The Canadian had last won a match in the round of 16 in Lyon on May 24.

In an excellent service display, Purcell dropped just 10 points on his serve in the entire match to advance to the round of 32.

Purcell had made it to the main draw with crushing straight set wins over Peter Polansky and Brayden Schnur respectively. Tuesday’s win improved his season record to 42-16 across levels. He has featured in six Challenger finals this season, all on hard courts, and won three of those titles.

Murray is off to a good start. He is far more experienced than the Aussie and also has a fantastic record in the tournament, having won three Canadian Open titles. Expect him to knock out the Aussie and advance to the next round.
