de Minaur Sends Norrie Packing

Coming off a solid performance at the Los Cabos Open, de Minaur was drawn to play Cameron Norrie in what was one of the opening round matches to watch out.

And de Minaur lived up to his 8/11 favourites tag by sending Norrie packing in straight sets and advancing to round two.

De Minaur won 7-5, 6-4 in a match that lasted an hour and 44 minutes and saw the Aussie lose his serve just once. With a first serve winning stat of 74%, de Minaur also sealed the deal when he won 58% of Norrie’s second serve points.

Norrie did save a set-point in the opening set off his opponent’s serve but once de Minaur had broken him back to love, there wasn’t too much looking back. The Aussie served it out the second time he had the chance and then broke his opponent early in the second set.

While de Minaur missed two match-points on Norrie’s serve, he came back to serve out the match in the next game.

Diallo Surprise for Evans

Dan Evans had entered this tournament on the back of a rare title win last week when he clinched the WTA 500 competition in Washington. In what was a near-clean performance from Evans he dropped just one set in the entire competition there.

Which is why it was no surprise he was a whopping 2/5 favourite coming into this opener against the little-known Diallo.

As it turned out, Diallo was dialled in from the very beginning and in a contest that lasted for over two hours, he thwarted all that Evans could throw at him and won 7-6 (4), 7-5.

There were no breaks of serves in the first set even as Diallo faced the only break-point of the set and promptly saved it. In the second, Diallo was a break up on two occasions but Evans hung in there by breaking back.

It was in the 11th game that Diallo managed to get past his opponent’s serve for the third time and this time around, served it out to clinch the win.

In doing so, he had won his maiden main draw match of his career. Can the Canadian now double his count?
