Sabalenka Returns after Wimbledon

It’s been a while since Sabalenka took to court for a competitive match having last featured at Wimbledon. She had been a semifinalist there before losing to Ons Jabeur in a hard-fought three-setter.

Sabalenka now returns to hardcourt competitions having registered some of her best performances on this surface this year.

Her maiden career Grand Slam win came at the Australian Open after she had kick-started the season with a title win at the Adelaide International. Sabalenka would go on to make the final of the Indian Wells Open as well, giving her a 20-3 win-loss record in hardcourt competitions.

The world number two now resumes her journey on this surface having reached the semifinal at this tournament in 2021. That has been her best showing at the Canadian Open but she followed that up with a third round exit last year, losing to Cori Gauff in the process.

This time around she can be tipped to go really deep into the tournament.

Martic Eases Past Bucsa

Cristina Bucsa put up a late resistance in her opener but Martic quashed her challenge quickly enough to advance to the second round. Martic was on court for an hour and seven minutes and demolished the lucky loser 6-0, 6-4 in her opener.

The Croat, who had lost in the first round of the Washington Open last week, had entered this tournament having won just one main draw match here. And even that had come in 2011.

With no victory in this competition in nearly 12 years, Martic would have felt a tad nervous but all of that was shrugged away in fine style. She ran away with the first set by clinching three breaks of serves and losing just three points on her own serve.

In the second, Bucsa broke back after losing her serve in the first game but once Martic went 3-1 up again there was no looking back. The world number 35 did save three break-points while serving for the match but closed out soon after.

Sabalenka will be a different kettle of fish for Martic though.

Sabalenka v Martic Prediction and Tip
