It’s 1-1 between the two players. They last met in Toronto in 2022 where Maia won in straight sets.

Maia beats Frech

Brazil’s Beatriz Haddad Maia is off to a good start in Montreal as she dispatched Magdalena Frech 6-4, 6-2 in an hour and 45 minutes. It was a good performance from the 11th-seeded star, who won 76% of the first service points while never having her service broken.

As a runner-up in the Canadian Open last season, Maia has done well to keep that rhythm going.

Ranked World No. 12, Beatriz has had a decent spell in 2023; she now has 27 wins to 15 losses.

Over the year, she has delivered some good results – notably reaching her first Grand Slam semifinal (French Open), the quarters in the Italian Open, and round four in Wimbledon.

The season has also seen her beat a few big names like Ons Jabeur, Daria Kasatkina, Elena Rybakina, and Ekaterina Alexandrova.

Maia has also fared well in doubles, having won the Madrid Open and taking home the runner-up silverware in Indian Wells.

Fernandez Knocks out Stearns

Montreal-born, home favourite Leylah Fernandez began her campaign in the WTA 1000 event with a clinical 6-3, 6-2 win over Peyton Stearns in the opener.

Having endured a highly mediocre season with no titles to show for it, the youngster is now seeking some reprieve and revival. Her record stands at 23-16, albeit she has fallen out of the top 50 and now finds herself ranked #81.

Leylah’s single-most noticeable result came in ITF Madrid, where she made it to the final four. Apart from that, the 20-year-old has not quite managed to win multiple main-draw matches in any other event.

Her last tournament was the Citi Open, where she started as a qualifier. Beating Bernarda Pera in the opener, Fernandez next met Maria Sakkari and lost in straight sets.

A US Open runner-up in 2021, Leylah has had difficulties since trying to recapture some of that glory.  That said, she is young and gaining precious experience; there is no reason why she cannot reach that height and go further again.

Maia v Fernandez Prediction and Tip

Expect an intriguing affair where Maia, on account of her superior experience and momentum, starts as the favourite.

  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 20.5 games in the match: 5/6
