McDonald Ends Rublev’s Campaign

Starting out a 3/1 underdog, McDonald took advantage of Rublev’s second serve issues to register a shock, straight-set win over his Russian opponent.

In a match lasting an hour and 28 minutes, McDonald defeated Rublev 6-4, 6-3 to move into the third round of this tournament for the first time in his career. In fact before coming into this year’s Canadian Open, McDonald hadn’t won a single main draw match here.

He would go on to ease past Aslan Karatsev in the first round here to end that drought before saving both his break-points in the Rublev encounter. In turn he broke Rublev three times to notch up his victory.

This win makes it 15-8 on the win-loss for the season on the hardcourt surface for McDonald. He now faces a player who hasn’t played a lot of tennis in recent times and will now be featuring in his third match in as many days.

Raonic Eases Past Daniel

In just his third tournament on returning from injury, Raonic registered his fourth win and made it to the third round.

Having stunned Frances Tiafoe in a three-set win in the first round, the former world number three did not face a lot of difficulties as he steamrolled Taro Daniel in straight sets here.

Raonic was on court for an hour and a half to clinch a 6-4, 6-3 victory with his booming serve proving to be the difference between the two players.

Serving up 15 aces in the encounter, Raonic did not face a single break-point in the encounter while overcoming his opponent’s serve once in each set. He won 90% of his first serve points which aided him no end.

And it’s this very serve that will go a long way in keeping McDonald away as he looks to end his career on a high.

McDonald v Raonic Prediction and Tip

  • Low Risk Tip: Raonic to win: 8/11
