Sinner Eases Past Berrettini

Not so long ago, Sinner and Matteo Berrettini were neck in neck in terms of quality and even rankings. Berrettini had hit a career-best of sixth in the world before sliding down the charts as he struggled to keep pace with the rest of the players while Sinner has slowly moved up the rankings charts and is currently at his career-best of eighth.

In recent times, Berrettini, who has fallen to 38th at the moment, has shown a bit of a spark and signs of returning to those glory days of being at his best. More so when he made the fourth round at Wimbledon earlier this season.

He hadn’t played any tennis since then and while he eased past Gregoire Barrere in straight sets in the first round here, he would have known his real test was always going to be against a player of the quality of Sinner.

And Sinner showed why he is so highly-rated as he used up just an hour and 31 minutes to reach the third round, winning 6-4, 6-3 in the process.

Sinner did face a whopping seven break-points in the encounter but saved all of them even as he overcame his fellow countryman’s serve once apiece in both the sets.

Can Sinner continue with his run against Murray as well as he looks to make it to the quarterfinals here for the first time in his career?

Murray Scrapes Past Purcell

After having eased to a straight-set win over Lorenzo Sonego in the first round, Murray was forced to be on court for two hours and 48 minutes as he got past Max Purcell in his second round win.

Murray was down 2-4 in the deciding set against Purcell before breaking back and taking a 5-4 lead. He earned two match-points in the 10th game off his opponent’s serve which he missed but in the 12th, when he got two more, Murray converted the second of those.

In the end, Murray came through 7-6 (2), 3-6, 7-5 to reach the third round of the Canadian Masters for the first time since 2015. He had won the title that year and did not feature in this competition again till 2022 when he was ousted in the first round.

Murray will know things could get a lot tougher against Sinner and he will need to come up with something sterling to overcome his opponent.

Sinner v Murray Prediction and Tip
