Tommy Paul v Marcos Giron Head to Head

Their only match at the highest level came in 2021 in Miami and Giron had won that in straight sets.

Paul Scrapes Past Cerundolo

It wasn’t the prettiest of wins for Paul but he managed to find a way to carve out a second round victory over Francisco Cerundolo. Paul, who had needed three sets to get past Diego Schwartzman in the first round, was on court for two hours and 49 minutes in a tough win.

Paul won 7-6 (2), 6-7 (2), 6-2 against his 22nd-ranked opponent to make his way to the third round of this competition for the second year running.

In a cagey first set, neither player managed a break of serve but Paul managed to clinch it easily in the tie-breaker. The second set, on the other hand, looked to be headed Cerundolo’s way when he broke Paul to go 5-1 up.

The American came back well to push the set into a tie-breaker but Cerundolo levelled things out there.

In the third, Paul did something similar as he took a 4-0 lead and while he lost his serve once, there was no looking back from there for him.

Last year, Paul had entered the quarterfinals of the Canadian Masters. Can he make it there yet again with a win in this encounter?

Qualifier Giron Shocks Rune

Holger Rune is having the time of his life on a tennis court but it was not to be for him at the Canadian Open as he went down to Giron in what was a shock result.

Here is a player who has struggled to maintain his career-best ranking of 49 with Giron having fallen to 70th in the world. He was forced to feature in the qualifiers and while he won those relatively without a problem Giron knew he had to do a lot better in the main draw.

That’s what the American has done so far.

In the first round, Giron edged out the 11/20 favourite Emil Ruusuvuori in two tie-breakers but it was his second round victory that turned out to be even better.

Going in as a 21/10 underdog against the world number six, Rune, Giron registered a 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 win over his much-fancied opponent. In doing so he has reached the third round of a home Masters 1000 tournament for only the second time in his career, having done that in Indian Wells in 2019.

Can he overcome Paul as well?

Paul v Giron Prediction and Tip

Paul holds the edge here and while Giron has done well so far to get to this stage, it might not be easy for him to continue in the same vein. Expect a straight-set win for Paul.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Paul to win: 1/2
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Paul to win in straight set: 6/5
