Taylor Fritz v Alex de Minaur Head to Head

There have been five previous meetings at the highest level between these two and two other matches at the ATP Next Gen Finals and the Surbiton Challenger in their early careers. At the highest level, Fritz leads 3-2 having won their last three matches in a row.

Fritz Scrapes Past Humbert

After having earned a first round bye, Fritz was a huge favourite to ease past Ugo Humbert in the second round and in the process register his ninth win in 10 matches.

While Fritz did make it to those nine victories it wasn’t as straightforward a victory as he would have liked as the American was on court for more than two and a half hours. And he needed some luck.

In the first set, for instance, Fritz was down a break and had Humbert serving at 5-4. Fritz broke back to push the set into a tie-breaker in which he was then down a set-point at 5-6. Again, the American saved that and went on to clinch it off his second set-point.

Humbert came back to break a loose Fritz serve in the eighth game of the second set and while Fritz responded with an early break in the decider, his opponent had levelled things out soon after. Fritz wasn’t done yet as he overpowered Humbert serve in the eighth game and then served it out to clinch the third round spot.

de Minaur Eases to a Win over Diallo

While Gabriel Diallo did put up a fight in the second set of his second round encounter against de Minaur, there wasn’t much he could against the rasping form of his Aussie opponent. De Minaur was pushed to an hour and 50 minutes in the end but he came through 6-4, 7-5 to enter the third round.

De Minaur, who had made the final of the Los Cabos Open last week before falling to Stefanos Tsitsipas, then went on to send Cameron Norrie away in the first round here.

He would then go on to save a break-point and then clinch the opening set against Diallo by winning the third break-point in the ninth game.

Things looked to be going his way when de Minaur broke Diallo in the first game of the second set too but he then lost his serve in back to back games to fall 1-3 behind. De Minaur’s power, however, was too much to handle for his Canadian opponent who was then broke twice more in the set including once in the 11th game.

De Minaur served it out to love in the next game to grab his third round spot.
