Garbine Muguruza v Elena-Gabriela Ruse Head to Head
The two women have never met before – this will be their first competitive match.
Muguruza Needs to Find Some Form
Two-time Grand Slam champion Muguruza has had an indifferent 2019 to date, and has struggled to find her form. Her best performance came at Indian Wells where she reached the quarter-final before losing to the eventual winner, Bianca Andreescu, but, other than that, her results so far have been littered with disappointing early exits from tournaments.
She was ousted in the second round at the Miam Open two weeks ago, while managing just a fourth round place at the Australian Open to raise question-marks about her form.
However, Monterrey as a tournament has happy memories for her. She won the title here last year, and given a potentially gentle start to this year’s event in the shape of Ruse, can gain some early momentum in the tournament again.
Ruse, a Little Known Romanian Qualifier
21-year old Ruse will not be a familiar name to many people, having spent the majority of her career to date on the ITF circuit, where she has won six singles and seven doubles titles, the vast majority of them on clay.
To get to this stage, she had to come through qualifying, beating Jelena Jokovic on Monday to take her place in the tournament after the withdrawal of Muguruza’s original scheduled opponent, Heather Watson of Great Britain.
Ruse has never beaten a woman in the WTA top thirty.
Muguruza v Ruse Predictions & Tips
Muguruza, the defending champion, will start the overwhelming favourite for this match at 19/100, whilst you can get 7/2 on the Romanian. Muguruza has not been in good form to date this year, but, playing in a tournament she enjoys, will surely have too much experience and power for an opponent better suited to a clay surface.
Tip: Over 18.5 games in the match: 22/25 (Unibet)
