Rybakina Breezes Past Stephens
A day after battling past Jennifer Brady in a two-and-a-half hour contest in the second round, world no. 4 Elena Rybakina needed just 72 minutes to dispatch American Sloane Stephens in the round of 16.
Rybakina, who reached her first three WTA 1000 finals this year, is now two wins away from a fourth final at that level and three wins from a third title. While the Kazakh won the title in Indian Wells and the Italian Opesn, she finished runner-up in Miami. The 2022 Wimbledon champion had also made it to the Australian Open final this year, only to finish runner-up to Aryna Sabalenka.
On Thursday, both Rybakina and Stephens exchanged an early break in the first set, before Rybakina got a second break late in the set to take a one-set-to-love lead.
The second set too began with both players trading an early break, but it was Rybakina who finished strongly, winning the last four games in a row and sealing a 6-3, 6-3 victory.
Rybakina had rallied past Brady for a 6-7 (3-7), 7-6 (7-5), 6-3 victory in the second round.
Into her seventh quarterfinal of the season, Rybakina will be looking to reach a fifth semifinal with a 40th win of the season on Friday.

Kasatkina Motors Along
World no. 14 Daria Kasatkina reached a second quarterfinal at the Canadian Open after she defeated the Czech Republic’s Marie Bouzkova in the round of 16 on Thursday.
Broken in the very first game of the match, Kasatkina responded with an immediate break and then got a second break late in the set to take a one-set-to-love lead. The second set was even more competitive with both players breaking each other twice each in the first six games. However, Kasatkina got a third break in the ninth game of the set and then she closed out the match in the next to score a 6-3, 6-4 victory.
The Russian, who had reached the last eight in the Canadian Open, will be aiming to reach her first semifinal in the tournament in her seventh attempt.
She had begun her 2023 Montreal campaign with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Elise Mertens and then defeated Anna Blinkova 6-2, 7-5 in round 2.
A finalist in Adelaide-2 at the start of the season and in Eastbourne on grass, the six-time tour level champion will be aiming to reach a fourth semifinal in 2023. In addition to the two runner-up finishes, she was also a semifinalist in Charleston.
Rybakina v Kasatkina Prediction and Tip
Rybakina has been playing some incredible tennis this year. She did have a tough start in the tournament, but she showed her mental toughness in the comeback win in the opener. The dominant win on Thursday shows she has found her rhythm. Kasatkina is a tough opponent to deal with, but given how Rybakina has played this year, the Kazakh holds the edge in this contest.
Tips:
- Low Risk Tip: Rybakina to win: 1/3
- Moderate Risk Tip: Over 24.5 games in the match: 5/6
