Jannik Sinner v Gael Monfils Head to Head

Sinner leads the rivalry 3-1, but they have not met since the Italian’s last win in Sofia in 2021.

World no. 8 Jannik Sinner reached a first quarterfinal in Toronto after his round of 16 opponent Andy Murray pulled out of the tournament due to an abdominal injury.

The Scot, who is a three-time champion in Toronto, had spent close to five hours during his first two round wins over Lorenzo Sonego and Max Purcell respectively. However, he had an abdominal issue de to which he had to pull out of the tournament. As a result Sinner found himself into the quarterfinal at the Canadian Open for the first time in his career.

The Italian, who had a first round bye, had beaten compatriot Matteo Berrettini 6-4, 6-3 in the second round. He had saved all seven break points against Berrettini and converted half of four.

Into his 11th quarterfinal of the season, Sinner will be looking to reach a seventh semifinal in 2023. The 21-year-old had picked his seventh career title in Montpellier earlier this year and had finished runner-up in Rotterdam and Miami.

Additionally, he was also a semifinalist in Indian Wells, Monte-Carlo and Wimbledon.

Resurgent Monfils Scores Another Solid Win

A resurgent Gael Monfils reached his first quarterfinal of 2023 with a straight sets win over Aleksandar Vukic in the third round on Thursday.

Hampered by injuries, Gael Monfils has had a stop-start season so far, but the Frenchman seems to have regained form once again as he won his third straight match to beat Vukic 6-4, 6-4.

The 36-year-old world no. 276 struck nine aces and 24 winners, saved two of two break points and converted two fo seven to knock out the world no. 62.

Monfils had defeated world no. 29 Christopher Eubanks 7-6 (7-3), 6-7 (4-7), 6-1 in the first round before causing a huge upset in round 2 by taking down the fourth seed Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-4, 6-3. He has been broken just once this week and that was by Eubanks in the first round.

The former no. 6 has improved to 24-10 at the Canadian Open. He will be aiming to reach a third semifinal in the tournament, following his final four finishes in 2016 and 2019.

Sinner v Monfils Prediction and Tip

Sinner is the superior player. He has played a lot more than Monfils this year and a 38-11 season record shows that the Italian has been in excellent form throughout the year. Monfils meanwhile will be high on confidence after his run in the first three rounds. Expect a cracking contest with Sinner edging through in three.
