Evans Knocked Out Early in Toronto

While Evans was knocked out of the Canadian Masters in the very first round – and to the unheralded Gabriel Diallo too – he will have still have some of the confidence from his performance at the Washington Open.

The British number two had overcome Frances Tiafoe and Grigor Dimitrov on his way to winning the title in Washington. In the process, he had also won his first ever ATP 500 competition, helping him hit his career-best ranking of 21st in the process.

Rather interestingly, Evans hasn’t played a lot of tennis at this tournament in Cincinnati in the past.

He first tried to make it to the main draw in 2019 but was sent packing in the qualifiers before winning his only main draw match at this tournament in 2020 when he defeated Andrey Rublev in the first round.

Since then Evans has lost three in a row – to Milos Raonic in 2020, Diego Schwartzman in 2021 and Filip Krajinovic last season. Can he turn things around here?

Musetti Makes Third Round at the Canadian Masters

Featuring in his first hardcourt match of the season, Musetti was able to make it to the third round in Toronto last week before he was knocked out by the third-ranked Daniil Medvedev. He had defeated Yoshihito Nishioka and Thanasi Kokkinakis to get there.

This year has been a strong one for Musetti otherwise too. He has gone 16-11 on clay and 7-4 on grass, reaching the semifinals at Barcelona and Bastad.

The issue for Musetti has been his performances in hardcourt competitions which have been anything but exemplary.

The Italian went out in the first round of the Australian Open and then lost his openers at both, the Indian Wells and Miami Masters. A turnaround in fortunes finally came in Toronto but he will look to ensure it was no flash in the pan.

Evans v Musetti Prediction and Tip

Evans might have lost his opener last week where Musetti made the third round but on hardcourts, we will have to back the Brit to come through.
