Anastasia Potapova v Celine Naef Head to Head

Potapova leads the head-to-head 1-0 having beaten Naef most recently during the grass swing at Wimbledon.

Potapova Winless In Three Matches

Anastasia Potapova’s winless run stretched to three matches following a straight-sets defeat to Karolina Muchova in the first round of the Canadian Open.

Defeat comes hot on the heels of a retirement in Washington, where Potapova hurt her ankle and couldn’t be able to continue in her match against Belinda Bencic while the first set was on serve at 5-6.

Her last win on Tour came almost a month ago when she defeated Kaja Juavan in the second round of Wimbledon. It was also at Wimbledon when she played Celine Naef, their first career meeting, and which was won by Potapova in straight sets.

Potapova has forged a career-best year on the WTA Tour in 2023, but she has a negative win-loss record on outdoor hard courts. In 19 matches on the surface, she has won six main draws.

However, that record gets slightly when you incorporate results on indoor hard, where Potapova reached the last eight in Lyon and won her only title of the year at Linz.

Naef Set for WTA 1000 Main Draw

Celine Naef is one of the brightest young prospects in women’s tennis. She is only 18, but has captured five titles on the ITF circuit, one of those a W40 in Porto earlier this season, which fast-tracked her rise into the world’s Top 200.

Naef has since made a huge jump, transitioning to the main tour this season. She made her WTA main draw debut in ‘s-Hertogenbosch and where she upset the seven-time Grand Slam champion Venus Williams in her opener in three sets.

As if to prove that win was not a fluke, Naef backed it up by beating a Tour regular in Caty McNally before her campaign came to a halt in the quarterfinal.

But her mesmeric rise continued to take shape as just a few weeks later, she qualified for her first Grand Slam main draw at senior level at Wimbledon.

The Swiss youngster has been given a wild card by the Cincinnati officials who are convinced of her potential, and so let’s see if she can live up to the hype here.

Potapova v Naef Prediction and Tip

This could be a tricky one for Potapova. Naef is massively talented and has troubled some of the Tour’s veterans in recent weeks. She might sneak set, but winning outright is a bit of a stretch. So we’ll take the uber-experienced Potapova.
