Featuring in the ATP Masters 1000 competition in Toronto in the week preceding the Cincinnati Masters, Fokina looks to be a much-improved player in hardcourt competitions this season.
In all the previous seasons of his career, Fokina had never managed to make it past the second round of an outdoor hardcourt Masters tournament and just once to the third round of an indoor one.
This year Fokina has changed things around.
It started with his performance at the Indian Wells Masters where he entered the quarterfinals. A third round appearance at the Miami Masters followed soon after and last week he surpassed expectations with a semifinal showing in Toronto.
Wins over JJ Wolf, Alexander Zverev and Casper Ruud made it even more special.
The question now is whether he can replicate that in Cincinnati as well.

Etcheverry Has Won Just Two Hardcourt Matches
In a career that has seen Etcheverry break into the top 30 of the rankings, it’s a bit of a surprise that the Argentine has a 4-10 win-loss record in hardcourt competitions. This is despite Etcheverry being primarily a clay-court player.
And two of those wins have come this season as Etcheverry reached the second round at both, the Australian Open and Miami Masters. At the former, he overcame Gregoire Barrere and then overpowered Pavel Kotov to move forward.
Unfortunately for Etcheverry, against players of any known pedigree on hardcourt surfaces, he has barely done anything of note.
And while Fokina could show some signs of exhaustion having played on Saturday and then having to play again within a couple of days, Etcheverry will have his work cut out on this surface.
