Svitolina had already begun to get back to playing at her best following her return to the tennis court after the birth of her child and improved to 26th in the world.
Unfortunately for her, Svitolina did not last too long at the Montreal Open last week where she was sent packing by Danielle Collins in the first round. She lost 6-2, 6-2 in that encounter.
This followed a semifinal appearance at Wimbledon and the quarterfinal in Washington, having also made the quarterfinal of the French Open.
Svitolina had made the semifinal at this competition in Cincinnati in 2015, her best ever performance but even other than that she has done reasonably well here. A couple of quarterfinal appearances and two third round matches have punctuated her showings here.
She has a tough opener here but will feel confident about her own self coming into this.

Wozniacki Makes Decent Return to Competitive Tennis
Having last played in 2020, Wozniacki is now a mother of two after having retired from the sport that season. She made a return last week at the Canadian Open and registered a win in her very first match as she overcame Kimberly Birrell in the opener in that tournament.
And while Wozniacki fell in straight sets to Marketa Vondrousova in the second round, she put up a fighting performance in the second set of that encounter.
She now returns to the tournament in which she has a similar record to Svitolina. The former world number one has never made the final here but was a semifinalist once and a three-time quarterfinalist as well.
Against Svitolina, she will find the going tough but Wozniacki has shown in her brief time on court last week she can hold her end up.
