Lorenzo Sonego v Alexander Shevchenko Head to Head

Sonego and Shevchenko have never faced off in a competitive match before this.

Sonego Falls in Toronto Opener

At one point early last year, he was ranked 21st in the world but Sonego has now fallen to 39th and that has been down to his poor performances last season.

And now again, this season as well.

Sonego’s best showing of 2023 came at the Miami Masters where he won three successive rounds to make it to the round of 16. He followed that up with something similar at the French Open, a run that involved a win over Andrey Rublev.

Other than those two, however, Sonego has made it past the second round just four times but more importantly lost in the first round on 10 occasions.

Can he avoid that ignominy here in Cincinnati after losing to Andy Murray in the first round at Toronto?

Shevchenko Makes Shock Run in Qualifiers

Having overcome Maxime Cressy and shocked Sebastian Korda in the first couple of rounds of the Washington Open two weeks ago, Shevchenko is back playing at the highest level. This time around he was forced to come through the qualifiers and enter the main draw of an ATP 1000 event for the third time in his career.

The first two times Shevchenko featured in such a tournament was also earlier this year and both those came on clay.

At Madrid, he overcame JJ Wolf and Jiri Lehecka to make the third round before entering the Rome Masters as a lucky loser in the second round. A stunning victory over the much fancied Sebastian Baez gave him a place in round three.

And even his pathway to the main draw hasn’t been straightforward with Shevchenko winning against Marton Fucsovics and Diego Schwartzman to seal his first round berth.

It’s this kind of form against some of the top level players that makes Shevchenko one of those to watch out.

Sonego v Shevchenko Prediction and Tip

While Sonego is a 9/20 favourite here, we don’t think Shevchenko will let things go easily. Could see a third set here.

Tips:

  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 21.5 games in the match: 5/6
