Marta Kostyuk v Jasmine Paolini Head to Head
There have been a couple of meetings between these two players and both have won one. The first came in the qualifiers of this very tournament which Kostyuk had clinched in straight sets.

Having stunned Bianca Andreescu and Caroline Garcia in the first two rounds of the Washington Open, Kostyuk looked like she had kick-started her time on the American hardcourts with a bang.
As a result she also improved her ranking to a career-best of 32nd in the world despite falling to Liudmilla Samsonova in the quarterfinal of that tournament.
Unfortunately for Kostyuk she was unable to back up that effort with anything of note in Montreal last week where she lost in the first round. Kostyuk was downed in three sets by Qinwen Zheng, who had gone into the encounter as a favourite.
Kostyuk likes her time on hardcourt surfaces though, having won 16 of the 25 matches she has featured on it this season. This includes a title win – the first of her career – in Austin earlier this year.
Can she now make a winning start in Cincinnati having made the second round here last year too?

Paolini Makes it Through the Qualifiers
A stunning win over Donna Vekic at the Montreal Open last week took Paolini to the second round where Madison Keys also withdrew from the competition. It gave Paolini a rare chance to feature in the third round of a WTA 1000 tournament, having done that only once before in her career.
Jessica Pegula sent her packing from the competition in that encounter but Paolini is back here in Cincinnati having made it through the qualifiers to enter the main draw.
The 49th-ranked player overcame a one-set deficit against Rebecca Masarova in the first qualifying round to clinch a final set thriller at 7-5 in that match. She would then edge out Camila Osorio in the second to qualify for the main draw.
Paolini has never made past the first round of this tournament in three previous attempts. Can she carry her good form forward here?
