Mayar Sherif v Xiyu Wang Head to Head

Sherif and Wang have never faced off before this.

Sherif Has Struggled in Hardcourt Tournaments

Sherif was ranked 74th on the WTA charts late last year but her performances on clay this season have propelled her forward. She now sits at the cusp of breaking into the top 30 thanks to title wins at Valencia and Makarska and a quarterfinal appearance at the Madrid Open.

Even more recently, Sherif continued that form on clay forward to make it to the semifinal at the Palermo Open.

Where Sherif will face a huge challenge is to take that forward in hardcourt competitions, a surface that’s not quite her forte.

Take the example of 2023 itself in which Sherif has featured in nine hardcourt tournaments and has won a mere main draw matches. Participating at the Canadian Open last week, Sherif was routed 6-4, 6-2 by Marketa Vondrousova in the very first round.

Which is why, she might be facing a 93rd-ranked player here, but Sherif doesn’t quite start off as a favourite.

Wang Wins One to Make the Main Draw

As luck would have it, Wang got a direct entry into the second round of the Cincinnati qualifiers where she then defeated Yulia Putintseva 6-1, 6-3 to enter the main draw.

Wang will now hope she can live up to her favourites odds after having started the season at her career-best ranking of 49th in the world but having fallen to 93rd through the course of this year.

That was thanks to a string of poor results, with Wang needing nine tournaments to win successive matches this year. She then made it to the fourth round at Rome but since then has won a total of two main draw matches.

While Wang’s record in hardcourt competitions in her career isn’t too bad, this year has been an exception. While that doesn’t affect the odds too much as she still starts off a favourite, it will be interesting to see if a clay-courter can make things difficult for her.

Sherif v Wang Prediction and Tip

Sherif is the higher-ranked player by some distance but it’s Wang who starts off a 3/4 favourite and on a hardcourt surface we will have to go with that.
