Tsitsipas Was the Runner-up Last Year

Last year’s runner-up Stefanos Tsitsipas comes to this year’s tournament with a solid 39-14 season record behind him. However, he would be disappointed to have lost his opening match in Toronto last week in the second round to Gael Monfils.

The Greek will be eager to quickly overcome the setback and regain the type of form he displayed a week before in Los Cabos. Tsitsipas won four matches in the Mexican city to win the 10th title of his career. It was his 27th final at the tour level and the third this year.

The previous two finals of the season ended in defeats for Tsitsipas as he finished runner-up at the Australian Open and in Barcelona.

The 25-year-old world no. 4 has a strong record in the tournament. He was a semifinalist in 2020 and 2021, before going down in the final to Borna Coric last year.

Can he shake off last week’s shock defeat and make a winning start in Cincinnati?

Shelton Overcomes Eubanks

Ben Shelton came back from a set down to beat Christopher Eubanks in a three-set first round contest.

There were just three breaks of serve in the contest, with Eubanks getting the first one in the opening set. The world no. 29 couldn’t break again in the match while the world no. 40 broke once in each of the next two sets to seal a 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 victory.

With the win, the 20-year-old improved his season record to 12-19 at the tour level. He was amazing at the start of the season, reaching his first major quarterfinal in Melbourne. But it has been a bit of a roller-coaster for him since then.

Can Shelton win tour level consecutive matches for the first time since the Australian Open in January and match his previous best result at Cincinnati, which was a third round finish last year?

Tsitsipas v Shelton Prediction and Tip

Tsitsipas is the superior player in this contest and he should roll past the American to reach the round of 16.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Tsitsipas to win: 1/4
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Under 23.5 games in the match: 4/5
