Having won six matches in a row leading up to her quarterfinal match at the Canadian Open, Gauff was actually quite a strong favourite in that encounter against the world number three Jessica Pegula.
Pegula, who knows Gauff’s game better than most having been her doubles partner over time, did not hold back though and in a match that went right down to the wire, came away a winner in three sets.
Gauff would be a tad disappointed after having shown the kind of form in recent times, especially after signing up with Brad Gilbert as her advisor/coach. While Gilbert won’t be assuming full-time duties here, it does make it interesting to see how Gauff goes now against high-ranked power-hitters having had her problems with that before.
She enters the Cincinnati Open on the back of a 21-6 win-loss record in hardcourt competitions but having never gone past the second round here.
The American has a good chance of doing that here but she would like to do a lot better than that.

Sherif Struggles Against Wang
In one of the longest matches of the tournament, Sherif escaped with a win by the skin of her teeth against Xiyu Wang and booked her place in the second round.
Sherif edged a 7-6 (3), 4-6, 7-6 (5) victory over Wang in a match lasting three hours and 11 minutes and despite losing her serve more times than she could break her opponent’s.
The two traded breaks in the fourth and fifth games of the opening set before Sherif saved a set-point off her own serve in the 10th. She managed to take hold of the set in the tie-breaker that followed.
Not to be outdone, Wang managed to save 10 of the 11 break-points she faced in the second set but broke her opponent twice to level things out.
Sherif went a break down on two occasions in the decider including once when Wang had a chance to serve out the match. She broke back both times and again, in the tie-breaker that followed, earned herself a scrappy win.
She will need to do a lot better if she wants to compete against Gauff.
Gauff v Sherif Prediction and Tip
We can expect this to be a straightforward win for Gauff. A quick, two-setter this.
