Jasmine Paolini v Cristina Bucsa Head to Head
Their only previous meeting came on the ITF circuit in Valencia in 2016. Paolini had won that one.

Having qualified for the Cincinnati Open with wins over Rebecca Masarova and Camila Osorio, Paolini was never the favourite going into her first round match against Marta Kostyuk. In fact, some bookmakers had pegged her win at a whopping 6/4 against a player who has hit a career-best ranking of 32nd at the moment.
Paolini had other ideas though.
Not only did Paolini defeat Kostyuk she did that in a mere 63 minutes to come through to the second round at the Cincinnati Open for the first time in her career.
The Italian 27-year-old broke her opponent five times in the match for her 6-2, 6-1 win, which included a run of six games in a row in the second set after Paolini had fallen a break behind there.
She will now face fellow qualifier Bucsa in the second round but irrespective of the result, she will start the new week next ranked in the top 40 for the first time in her career.

Bucsa Shocks Bencic
Bucsa was 9/2 odds to overcome the world number 14 Belinda Bencic in the first round.
Down a set, those odds lengthened greatly and a win looked a formality for the Swiss number one. It become more of a done deal when Bencic then took a 2-0 lead in the second set as well.
The turnaround came in the third game of the second set when Bucsa managed to draw level and soon after take a 3-2 lead with a break of serve in hand. And while Bencic broke back in the sixth game, Bucsa followed it up with two more breaks of serves to get to a set apiece.
Bucsa would then go on to break Bencic’s serve three times in the decider to finish things off against a shocked Bencic.
This looks like a once-in-a-blue-moon showing but that momentum could help Bucsa no end against Paolini.
Paolini v Bucsa Prediction and Tip
Paolini starts off a favourite here but she will only just be ahead in this battle with Bucsa’s win over Bencic counting towards improving her morale. We could see a third set here as well.
