It was four years since Venus Williams last won a match against a top-20 player at the highest level. In the first round at the Cincinnati Open she finally achieved that again by overcoming the 16th-seeded Veronika Kudermetova in straight sets and marching into the second round.
Venus won 6-4, 7-5 in a match that saw her break her opponent six times having gone two breaks down in the first set at one point.
With Kudermetova serving for a 5-1 lead, Venus won five games in a row to grab the set. And it was no different in the second set where Kudermetova broke twice again to go 4-0 and then 5-1 up only for Venus to retaliate by clinching the next six successive games.
This was only Venus’ third wins of the season, having overcome Katie Volynets in Auckland, Camila Giorgi in Birmingham and now Kudermetova.

Zheng Eases Past Sasnovich
Despite her own form showing a bit of dodginess, Zheng did not waste too much time in getting past Aliaksandra Sasnovich in her opening round match.
In a match lasting a mere hour and 18 minutes, Zheng eased to a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Sasnovich to win a main draw match here on her debut.
Zheng saved all of the three break-points she faced while overcoming her opponent’s serve twice in the first set and once in the second. In fact after cruising through the opening set, Zheng faced break-points in the second and fourth games of the second set which she saved and then earned herself a decisive break in the seventh.
This win followed Qinwen having entered the tournament with a 10-8 win-loss record in hardcourt competitions. While that’s not too bad on its own, Qinwen’s career-best ranking has been 19th in the world. For someone that high on the charts, she would have liked to do a lot better.
