Holger Rune v Mackenzie McDonald Head to Head
Their only previous meeting came at the Indian Wells Masters played earlier this year and Rune had won that in straight sets.

Rune had begun the season with a first round loss at the Adelaide International in January. Since then he has gone on to win one title but more importantly gone on to make it to the final of two ATP Masters 1000 tournaments as well.
There have been other solid results coming his way which has meant Rune had a 37-13 win-loss record coming into the Canadian Masters last week.
Having received a bye after hitting a career-best ranking of fifth in the world, Rune had started off a 7/20 favourite to win his second round encounter against Marcos Giron. Unfortunately for him and rather stunningly, he fell to a three-set defeat to the struggling Giron.
Rune will now have a chance to turn things around in Cincinnati, having featured here only once before and lost in the first round in 2022. He should have not have a lot of difficulties despite his opponent’s reasonable form in recent times.

McDonald Eases Past Hanfmann
More known for his performances on clay, Yannick Hanfmann had entered this tournament on the back of zero wins in hardcourt competitions this season.
And that showed up in his showing against McDonald who might have taken some time to get going but once he had found a way past Hanfmann in the first set, there was no looking back.
McDonald was on court for an hour and 36 minutes as he grabbed a 7-5, 6-1 win over Hanfmann after having overturned a 1-3 deficit in the first set.
At one stage, McDonald served for the opening set at 5-4 but was broken by the indefatigable Hanfmann. Fortunately for him, his hardcourt pedigree proved to be far too strong as he went on to win eight of the next nine games and clinch the second round place in this competition for the third successive year.
The American has never made the third round here and by the looks of things, it won’t be easy for him to do that here either.

Rune is 1/2 to win this which is quite lavish as far as winning odds for a world number five are concerned. Backing him to win it and might even do that in a couple of stretched sets.
