Coric Knocks Out Korda

No. 15 seed Borna Coric began his title defence with a straight sets win over Sebastian Korda in the first round of the Cincinnati Masters on Tuesday.

Coric, who beat Stefanos Tsitsipas in last year’s final for his first ever Masters 1000 title, came back from 1-4 down in the first set tiebreak to take a one-set-to-love lead.

The second set began with three consecutive breaks of serve with Coric getting two of them. He held on to the lead for the rest of the set to complete a 7-6 (7-5), 6-4 victory.

A semifinalist in Los Cabos earlier this month, Coric lost his opening round match in Toronto last week.

A three-time champion from eight finals, he is yet to reach a final this year. In addition to the final four finish in Los Cabos, he was also a semifinalist in Madrid and a quarterfinalist in Montpellier, Dubai and Rome.

Hurkacz Battles Past Kokkinakis

Hubert Hurkacz battled past Thanasi Kokkinakis in a three-hour-and-12-minute marathon on Tuesday.

The Polish player missed out on all eight break points that he held in the match, and he conceded the only break of the match to the Aussie in the second set. But it was his superior performance in the tiebreaks that helped him seal a 7-6 (7-2), 3-6, 7-6 (7-1) victory.

Hurkacz struck 13 aces and 64 winners during the course of the match to reach the second round for the third straight year in Cincinnati in what is his sixth try. Only once has he made the third round.

He won his sixth ATP title in Montpellier this year and has been in decent touch throughout the year, but has struggled to go deep in most of the tournaments.

Can he make it to the third round in Cincinnati?
