Ninth seed Taylor Fritz was given a tough fight by Jiri Lehecka in the first round but the American managed to survive the test and move into the second round.

Fritz saved five set points in the first set tiebreak, before converting a seventh set point to clinch the opening set.

He however put up a much better show in the second set, winning the match 7-6 (16-14), 6-2.

The world no. 9 dropped just six service points in a dominant second set performance.

A six-time champion on the tour, he won the titles in Atlanta and Delray Beach this year and reached a number of semifinals. As a result he is 43-18 at the tour level this year.

Sonego Edges Past Shevchenko

After going down to Andy Murray in the first round in Toronto, Lorenzo Sonego struck form in Cincinnati, winning the first round contest against Alexander Shevchenko in three sets.

The Italian saved 2 of 5 break points and converted half of eight to win the two hour and six minute contest 6-3, 3-6, 6-3.

Sonego won 81% points on his first serve and struck 28 winners to oust the world no. 88.

A semifinalist in Umag and a quarterfinalist in Montpellier and Dubai, Sonego has had an up and down season so far. He is a three-time tour level champion from five finals, but is et to reach a title clash this year.
