Paolini Makes a Quick Start

No. 11 seed Jasmine Paolini made a fast start in Cleveland as she breezed past Poland’s Magdalena Frech in the first round on Monday.

Paolini saved 6 of 8 break points and converted 6 of 10 to beat the qualifier 6-1, 6-3 in an hour and 12 minutes.

The world no. 35 will be looking to reach a second straight quarterfinal after her run to the last eight in Cincinnati last week. It was the first time that the Italian reached the last eight of a WTA 1000 tournament in her career, and that too after making the main draw through the qualifiers. but she couldn’t keep the run going as was stopped by Coco Gauff.

Paolini is 30-22 across levels this season. The 27-year-old reached her only WTA final of the season in Palermo but could not add to her only title she won in Slovenia in 2021. She was also a finalist in two WTA 125 tournaments this year, winning in Florence and finishing runner-up in Makarska.

Can she reach her fourth tour level quarterfinal of the season?

Wang Battles Past Burel

Qualifier Xinyu Wang battled past Clara Burel in the first round on Monday.

Both players converted four break points each in the first set before Wang won the tiebreaker. The second set too saw mutiple break with Burel getting three of them to just two from the Chinese.

With the match tied at one-set apiece, the third promised to be a tensed affair and it lived up to the billing. Both players broke each other twice each in the first 10 games before Wang got a decisive third break in the final game to seal a 7-6 (7-5), 4-6, 7-5 victory in two hours and six minutes.

Wang had qualified for the main draw with straight set wins over Ena Shibahara and Jamie Loeb respectively.

The three wins in Cleveland have extended the 21-year-old’s current win streak to eight matches, as she had won the Landsville 2 ITF tournament last week.

A semifinalist in Hua Hin and a quarterfinalist in Hobart, Wang will be looking to reach her third quarterfinal of the season on Wednesday.
