Top seed Caroline Garcia ended a four-match losing streak on Monday as she raced past the Czech Republic’s Linda Fruhvirtova in the first round of the Cleveland Open.
The world no. 7 would be relieved to have finally scored a win during the North American hard court swing. Ever since going down in the third round of Wimbledon to Marie Bouzkova, she lost her opening round matches in Washington, Montreal and Cincinnati.
But she looked in fine form in Cleveland easing past the world no. 55 in just 68 minutes.
Broken once in the first set, Garcia converted 4 of 5 break points to reach the round of 16 for the second time in Cleveland. The last time she did that was in 2021.
She will now be hoping to reach an eighth quarterfinal of the season. The 29-year-old is 30-18 this season and has featured in two finals in Lyon and Monterrey but couldn’t add to her 11 WTA titles.

Stearns Advances as Trevisan Retires
Peyton Stearns made a brisk start to the Cleveland Open winning the first set 6-1 against Martina Trevisan on Monday.
But both players had to work hard in the second set with both breaking each other four times each over the first nine games when lucky loser Trevisan decided to pull out of the contest with an injury.
Stearns benefitted from the withdrawal as she advanced to the next round.
The 21-year-old American improved to 39-16 across levels this year. Her best came in Bogoto where she reached her maiden final, only to finish runner-up. She was also a quarterfinalist in Austin and Rabat and will be hoping to reach a fourth tour level quarterfinal on Wednesday.
Additionally, she has also reached four ITF finals this year, winning two of them. Can she pull of a massive upset in the second round? Remember she has never beaten a top 10 player.
