Leylah Fernandez v Clara Tauson Head to Head

Their only previous meeting came at the French Open earlier this year and Tauson won that in three sets.

Fernandez Routs Noskova

In a match between two players who were both 10/11 odds (with bet365) to win it, it was Fernandez who secured the second round berth. What was stunning to watch was the manner in which she dismantled her opponent Linda Noskova, winning the encounter 6-0, 6-2.

Needing just 65 minutes to overcome Noskova, Fernandez broke her five times while saving both the break-points she faced. In total, she lost just six of her first serve points and an equal number points on the second serve to move forward.

Having come into this tournament on the back of a second round appearance at the Washington Open, a third round appearance in Montreal but then a qualifier exit in Cincinnati, Fernandez has a lot to play for in the lead-up to the US Open.

A former US Open finalist, she has been forced to feature in this tournament in the week preceding the season’s final Grand Slam as she looks to secure her form and rhythm for it. Can she now dish out a similar result to Tauson as she starts off a 4/6 favourite with bet365.

Tauson Shocks Krejcikova

Tauson hasn’t had the best of seasons and her ranking, 90th on the WTA charts is reflection of that. Which is why it was no surprise she had come into the tournament as a qualifier.

And when she lost in the second qualifying round to a clay court specialist in Nadia Podoroska, it looked like Tauson could find herself struggling to keep afloat in the top 100 of the rankings.

As it turned out, Tauson not only made it through to the main draw as a lucky loser, she also dumped out the world number 12 in stunning fashion. The Dane came back from 2-4 down in the first set to win 10 of the following 11 games including four breaks of serves to make the second round.

This made it her second appearance in the second round of an outdoor hardcourt competition following her performance at the Warsaw Open. What this makes even more special is it came against a 12th-ranked player, albeit one who might still not be fully fit after her Wimbledon injury.

Can she dish out something similar in round two despite starting out a 6/5 (bet365) underdog?

Fernandez v Tauson Prediction and Tip

Fernandez gets our backing to win this but could be a scrappy affair that goes to the third set.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Fernandez to win: 4/6 (with bet365)
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 20.5 games in the match: 5/6 (with bet365)
