Borna Coric v Rinky Hijikata Head to Head
Coric and Hijikata have never faced off in a competitive match before this.

While Coric hadn’t quite made a sterling start to his hardcourt competitions foray earlier this season, he looks to have found some rhythm in more recent times. He doesn’t fully seem to be out of the woods but a 3-3 win-loss record in August gives him a bit of a chance in a tournament in which he has made the quarterfinals twice before.
Victories over Jason Jung and Ilya Ivashka gave him a semifinal berth at the Los Cabos Open but a shock loss at the hands of Aleksandar Vukic in the first round of the Canadian Masters would have been a bit of a puzzle. Especially given that Coric was a 1/2 favourite (with bet365) and he still lost 6-2, 6-3.
An opening win over Sebastian Korda at the Cincinnati Masters would have been confidence-inducing but Hurbert Hurkacz ended his campaign in the second round. The Polish number one came back from a set down to win that one.
Coric will now be up against an upcoming player who has won a few main round matches but not done too much damage against players ranked way higher than him. He starts off a 3/10 favourite (with bet365) as a result of that.

Hijikata Overcomes Marchenko
Down a set and 0-2 in the second set, Hijikata staged an impressive comeback in his first round match against Ilya Marchenko to earn himself a berth in the second round at the Winston-Salem Open.
Ranked 111th in the world, Hijikata had come into this encounter on the back of a 3-7 main draw win-loss record in hardcourt competitions and yet was a 13/20 (with bet365) favourite. For a while though he barely played like one as Marchenko broke him twice in the first set and then again early in the second.
Hijikata responded with a break of his own and then lost his serve again to fall 2-3 behind.
From that point onward, however, there was no looking back for the Aussie as he broke his opponent twice more in the second set and two times in the third to win it in three.
He will need to keep up his tenacity starting out against a player of Coric’s pedigree.
