After a gritty three-set win over Roman Safiullin in the first round, Juan Manuel Cerundolo put up another gutsy performance in the second round of the Winston Salem Open to knock out the 10th seed Yannick Hanfmann.
Cerundolo held nerves during the three hour and 26 minute second round contest on Tuesday as he battled past the German for a 7-6 (7-3), 5-7, 7-6 (7-4) victory.
On Monday, Cerundolo had beaten Safiullin 7-6 (7-5), 3-6, 6-3 in two hours and 36 minutes.
A clay court specialist, the 21-year-old Argentine is playing his first-ever hard court tournament of the season at any level and he has already made an impression with the two thrilling wins.

Kumar Stuns Van de Zandschulp
He made it to the main draw as a lucky loser, but the world no. 385 Omni Kumar is making the most of the opportunity. Kumar stunned Arthur Rinderknech in straight sets in the first round on Monday and now he has upset the eighth seed Botic Van de Zandschulp in the second round.
Kumar, who beat Rinderknech 6-3, 7-6 (7-3), needed an hour and 32 minutes to dispatch Van de Zandschulp 6-3, 7-5 on Tuesday.
While he was not broken in the first round, the Dutchman did break the American once in the second set, but Kumar, who had dominated the first, bounced back from the break down in the second and raced to victory in the end.
Kumar had won his first qualifying round against Robin Haase, but was beaten by Illya Marchenko in the second qualifying round.
This is just the second ATP tournament for the 21-year-old Kumar, who lost in the first round in Los Cabos. Can he clinch a maiden ATP quarterfinal spot on Wednesday?
Cerundolo v Kumar Prediction and Tip
Kumar has played plenty of tennis on hard courts this year and is 39-24 on the surface across levels. He is coming off two quick wins and will be much less tired than the clay court specialist, who had to work really hard for his first two wins.
