Baez Rallies Past Galan

Returning to hard courts for the first time after a woeful 1-5 run on the surface earlier this year, Sebastian Baez got off to a winning start in Winston-Salem as he came back from a set down to beat Daniel Elahi Galán in the second round.

Seeded no. sixth in the tournament Baez had a first round bye. He began teh match by breaking Galan early in the firs set, but the Colombian bounced back with a double break late in the set to go up 1-0. The second set started with Galan breaking in the first game, but this time it was Baez who found his way back into the set and then got a second break to force the decider.

Both players were solid on their serve over the first nine games of the final set, but Baez broke during a four-deuce final game to win the contest 3-6, 6-4, 6-4.

Thanks to the win, the 22-year-old world no. 42 improved his season record to 22-19 at the tour level. He last played in Kitzbuhel, a couple of weeks ago, where he won his second title of the season by beating Dominic Thiem in the final. So currently Baez is on a six match winning streak. Can he extend that and reach a seventh tour level quarterfinal on Wednesday?

Vukic Edges Past Van Assche

No. 9 seed Aleksander Vukic began his campaign with a tough three-set win over Luca Van Assche on Tuesday.

The Aussie, ranked no. 51 in the world, struck 19 aces and 53 winners as he held off the Frenchman 6-3, 6-7 (5-7), 6-3 in a two hour and 29 minute contest.

Vukic, who won 16 of 21 net points, saved 1 of 2 break points and converted 3 of 4.

He has been playing well ever since the tour moved to the North American hard courts, finishing runner-up in Atlanta to Taylor Fritz and reaching the round of 16 in Toronto as a lucky loser.

Earlier this season, he had done well in the Challenger tournaments on hard courts, winning the title in Busan and finishing runner-up in Seoul. Overall, he is 8-7 on hard courts at the tour level this year and 32-14 across levels. He will be eyeing his second tour level quarterfinal of the season on Wednesday.
