Korda Sees Off Fucsovics

World no. 33 Sebastian Korda scored a solid win over the 14th seed Marton Fucsovics on Wednesday to reach the quarterfinal of the Winston-Salem Open.

Korda conceded a break in the eighth game of the first set to fall 3-5 behind but he broke back immediately to stay in the set, eventually going on to win the tiebreak and take a one-set-to-love lead.

The second set started with both holding serve over the first five games. It was followed by a series of three consecutive breaks, which saw Korda get his nose in front to take a 5-3 lead. He then saved two break points in the next game to claim a 7-6 (7-5), 6-3 victory.

It was a tough outing for the 23-year-old, who had begun his campaign with a 6-2, 6-3 drubbing of Benjamin Bonzi in the second round.

Korda, who was a finalist in Adelaide and a quarterfinalist at the Australian Open, is into the fourth quarterfinal in 2023, having also finished as a semifinalist in Queen’s. He has played less this season as a wrist injury had kept him out for a few months.

Can he reach a third semifinal of the season?

Gasquet Rallies Past Nakashima

No. 12 seed Richard Gasquet of France made it to the last eight in Winston-Salem for the fourth time in as many appearances as he rallied from a set down to beat America’s Brandon Nakashima in the round of 16 on Wednesday.

Gasquet, who has never made it past the quarterfinals in the tournament, conceded a double break in the opening set as Nakashima took a one-set-to-love lead. The Frenchman, however, fought back. He got a break in the first games of each of the next two sets, and held on to the lead on both the occasions to win the two hour and six minutes contest 2-6, 6-4, 6-4.

The world no. 57 had begun his campaign with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Marc-Andrea Huesler.

Gasquet had a very good start to the season, winning his 16th title by lifting the trophy in Auckland. But since then he has looked off colour and has struggled to win consecutive matches. This is only the third time at the tour level this year that he has won two matches in a row. In addition to the title success in Auckland, he was also a quarterfinalist in Stuttgart. Can he end the quarterfinal jinx in Winston-Salem on Thursday?
