Holger Rune v Roberto Carballes Baena Head to Head

There have been two previous meetings between these two players and both have won one. While Carballes Baena overcame his opponent on the clay courts of Cordoba in 2022, Rune extracted his revenge earlier this year at Wimbledon.

Has Rune Fully Recovered?

It has been a season to remember for Rune despite the Dane having won just one title. His performances at the Monte-Carlo Masters, Italian Open and then even at Roland-Garros have been enough to help Rune shoot up to number four in the world.

However, Rune would have liked to do a lot better in hardcourt competitions. Other than making it to the fourth round at the Australian Open he hasn’t won three matches in a row at any one of them and struggled to get going at both, the Canadian Masters and Cincinnati Open.

After losing his opener to Marcos Giron in Toronto, Rune was trailing Mackenzie McDonald by a set in his second round match in Cincinnati when he was forced to retire from it because of a back issue.

The good news is that Rune reckons the injury is getting better and he has been able to kick-start his practice. The question now is whether he will be match fit by the time he takes to court for his opener here and that could reflect a little in his match-winning odds here with bet365 offering 1/8 for his win.

Carballes Baena Hasn’t Played Hardcourt Tennis in a While

Known for his play on clay, Carballes Baena was able to break into the top 50 of the rankings earlier this year after he clinched his maiden ATP title in over five years. Like has been the case throughout his career even on the lower circuit, that tournament win came on clay.

Unfortunately for Carballes Baena, his performance on hardcourt surfaces has been anything but exemplary.

So much so that since the Miami Masters earlier this March, Carballes Baena hasn’t featured in any hardcourt competitions, opting to directly play in the US Open. This is further exemplified by the fact that his total win count on hardcourts is a mere two – at Pune and in Miami.

Coming up against a player of the calibre of Rune, Carballes Baena won’t have it easy by any stretch and it would be an achievement of some proportion if he did manage to even win a set here.

Rune v Carballes Baena Prediction and Tip
