Elena Rybakina v Marta Kostyuk Head to Head

There has been just one previous meeting and that came at the Adelaide International earlier this. Kostyuk came back from a set down to defeat Rybakina in that second round match.

Rybakina Hoping to Replicate Indian Wells Glory

Rybakina shot to fame last year when she won her maiden Wimbledon title against all odds but if anything this has been an even better year for her overall.

While she might not have won a Grand Slam this season – not yet anyway! – Rybakina enters the US Open on the back of a 41-11 win-loss record for the year. That is way better than her 43-21 record she had in what was her best year on court before 2023.

This includes a finals appearance at the Australian Open where she pushed Aryna Sabalenka to three sets before narrowly missing out on her second Grand Slam title. Rybakina would go on to defeat Iga Swiatek, Sabalenka and Jessica Pegula on her way to winning the Indian Wells Open and making the final of the Miami Open after that.

More recently, Rybakina was a semifinalist at the Montreal Open before Liudmilla Samsonova stunned her from being a set down.

She was forced to retire from her third round match at the Cincinnati Open but looks like she has regained full fitness on her way to this opening round match at the US Open, starting out a 3/10 favourite to win this bet365.

Kostyuk Hoping to Reverse Three-Match Losing Streak

On the back of her maiden title win in Austin, Kostyuk hit a career-high ranking of 33rd in the world earlier this year. She has fallen a little, to her 39th when the rankings are revealed on Monday, but she has shown enough mettle all year to suggest she could prove to be a handful.

Sure, Kostyuk is coming off a three-match losing streak since making it to the quarterfinal at the Washington Open but that could be down to the obvious inconsistencies that can be expected by a 21-year-old. Overall, she has had a 16-11 win-loss in hardcourt competitions.

Unfortunately for Kostyuk, this three-match losing run has been followed by a first round encounter against an in-form, top-five player – making it that much more difficult for the Ukrainian.

She starts off a 5/2 (with bet365) to shock Rybakina and while that seems a touch unlikely, it won’t be for the want of trying.

Rybakina v Kostyuk Prediction and Tip

Rybakina should make it through to the second round but there’s no doubting she would have preferred an easier opening round opponent here. Might even see a third set.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Rybakina to win: 1/3 (with bet365)
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 21.5 games in the match: 5/6 (with bet365)
