Taylor Fritz v Steve Johnson Head to Head

There have been six previous meetings between these two players and Fritz leads 4-2 on head to head. It’s 3-1 for Fritz in hardcourt competitions with their last meeting having come in 2021.

Fritz a Solid 30-8 in Hardcourt Competitions This Season

A winner of two hardcourt tournament titles this season, Fritz enters the US Open knowing he has a chance to push deep into the competition and with some luck even make the semifinal.

That’s the kind of form he has exhibited in recent times, which has helped him to a 30-8 win-loss record in hardcourt tournaments in 2023. More recently, in the North American hardcourt swing, Fritz has already won the Atlanta Open title, made the semifinal in Washington while also reached the quarterfinal of the Cincinnati Masters before Novak Djokovic ended his run.

What’s rather intriguing to watch is Fritz’s record at the US Open is his worst among Grand Slam results.

He has never made past the third round here and even that came in 2018 and 2020 respectively. Over the past two seasons, Fritz was bundled out in the second and first round respectively.

On the one hand that makes for a shocking statistic but on the other, it gives Fritz a chance to add ranking points to his kitty with barely anything to defend from the previous season at the US Open.

Can he ease to a win in his opener here, after starting out a whopping 1/20 favourite with bet365?

Johnson Gets a Wildcard Following Challenger Success

Johnson’s decline in the ATP Rankings has been slow and steady over the years but this season he plummetted from having started at 110th in the world to a season-low of 219th in the first week of July.

He was last ranked that low in 2012, 11 years ago!

Since then, however, Johnson has managed to pull things back a little with his performances on the Challenger circuit.

The American won the title at the Bloomfield Hills Challenger in July before adding a second one on the hardcourts of Lexington. In between those two, he also made the second round at the Newport Open but enters this US Open on the back of an opening loss at the Chicago Challenger.

Will he be able to put up a brave front against a top-10 player like Fritz now? The bookmakers certainly don’t think so with Johnson at 10/1 (with bet365) to shock Fritz.

Fritz v Johnson Prediction and Tip

This should be as straightforward as they come for Fritz with a straight-set win looking most likely a result for him.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Fritz to win in straight sets: 8/15 (with bet365)
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Fritz to win AND Under 31.5 games in the match: 1/1 (with bet365)
