Maria Sakkari v Rebeka Masarova Head to Head

Their only previous meeting came at the Madrid Open earlier this year and Sakkari had won that in three sets.

Sakkari in a Bit of a Strife More Recently

While Sakkari kick-started the season off on an excellent note, her more recent performances have been quite forgettable.

In fact there have been times when she has looked she might regain some of her old self on the tennis court but the former world number three has fallen to eighth in the world and another string of underwhelming performances could push her outside of the top 10 too.

Take for instance what’s happened on the North American hardcourt swing itself.

Sakkari looked to have done well in Washington as she came back from her first round loss at Wimbledon to defeat Leylah Fernandez, Madison Keys and Jessica Pegula on her way to the final.

She fell to the resurgent Cori Gauff in the title-decider but that confidence should have helped her build something better.

Instead, Sakkari fell in the very first round at the Montreal Open and then in the third round in Cincinnati.

With this kind of erratic form, it’s tough to see Sakkari (who is 1/4 with bet365 to win this) go too deep in the competition and for now, her immediate goal would be do better than her second round appearance at the US Open last year.

Masarova Struggling after Auckland Showing

It was a start to remember for Masarova who began the season as a qualifier at the Auckland Open and went on to make it to the final of that tournament.

Masarova then lost to Cori Gauff in that match but given her wins over the likes of Sloane Stephens and Karolina Muchova in that tournament, it looked like she could very well break into the top 50 and go even further more.

That, however, hasn’t happened with Masarova having struggled to replicate the Auckland Open results, at least in hardcourt competitions.

In fact in the seven hardcourt competitions that Masarova has played since then, including the Cincinnati Open last week, she has won just one main draw round. So much so that instead of getting herself a chance to feature in the WTA 250 competition in Cleveland, she was forced to take part at the Chicago Open – a WTA 125 tournament.

And while she made the quarterfinals there, it doesn’t look like sufficient momentum to take on the might of Sakkari – even an out of form Sakkari. No surprises then that Masarova starts off a 3/1 (with bet365) underdog in this one.

Sakkari v Masarova Prediction and Tip

Sakkari can be expected to win this and to do that in straight sets. Sure she hasn’t been in the best of form but against lower-ranked players, Sakkari has done what’s expected of her.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Sakkari to win in straight sets: 4/5 (with bet365)
