Caroline Garcia v Wang Yafan Head to Head

There have been two previous meetings between these two players and both have won one apiece. While both did come in hardcourt competitions they were played in 2018 and 2019 respectively.

Garcia Hoping to Continue Cleveland Run

As a world number four Garcia would have been expected to do a lot better than she has all of 2023. However, things look to have gone even more awry for Garcia in more recent times with the Frenchwoman been forced to play in a tournament just the preceding week before the US Open.

This was in the Cleveland Open and while, at the time of writing, she was in the quarterfinal, what had preceded even that is something that Garcia will be worried about.

Since reaching the third round at Wimbledon, Garcia had lost four successive matches – a defeat in Wimbledon followed by three successive opening round losses in Washington, Montreal and Cincinnati.

Marie Bouzkova, Sloane Stephens and Marta Kostyuk are difficult opponents for sure but Garcia would have been expected to do a lot better than lose four in a row against them.

If Garcia is hoping to look at the positives, she has her performances in hardcourt competitions from earlier in the year to emulate – a fourth round appearance at the Australian Open and finals in Lyon and Monterrey.

Can Garcia, who is 4/7 to win this (with bet365) start off with a solid showing?

Yafan Slowly Getting Back to Her Best

It was in 2019 in Acapulco that Yafan had won her maiden WTA title and with it, hit a career-best ranking of 47th in the world.

After that, however, Yafan’s form slowly deteriorated as she ended 2020 ranked 95th and was 309th and 412th in 2021 and 2022 respectively after that.

It’s finally this year that Yafan has managed to turn that around and that’s been thanks to her performances across all the surfaces at the lower level.

Yafan has won a whopping six titles in 2023, including one at the Stanford Open on the WTA 125 circuit, after starting out as a qualifier. And she took that form into the qualifiers of the US Open where she destroyed all her three opponents, dropping a sum of 10 games in three matches.

Which is why she is a mere 5/4 (with bet365) to win this, just about a second favourite despite playing a top-10 player. And given Garcia’s form it won’t be a surprise that she actually causes an upset here.

Garcia v Yafan Prediction and Tip

Backing Yafan to take out the world number seven in what we believe would be the highest-ranked player to get knocked out in the first round of the women’s singles draw.
