Liudmila Samsonova v Claire Liu Head to Head
There have been two previous meetings between these two players – one the ITF circuit and another in a WTA tournament – and both have won one. Samsonova defeated Liu at the 2023 WTA Abu Dhabi competition.

Samsonova has shown enough sparkle to put her down as one of the outsiders to go the distance at the US Open, having made the final of the Canadian Open.
What made that run to the Canadian Open final so special was the quality of Samsonova’s victories.
This was after she had made it to the Washington Open semifinal but what makes her recent even more interesting is the quality of the opponents she overcame to reach the title-decider in Montreal.
Samsonova defeated Qinwen Zheng in the second round before dishing out the shock of the tournament as she overcame the second seeded Aryna Sabalenka in the third. She would then go on to overcome Belinda Bencic and Elena Rybakina in the next two rounds to reach the final.
While Samsonova proved to be listless in the final against Jessica Pegula and then lost first round match in Cincinnati by Linda Noskova presumably because of exhaustion, she will know she has the wherewithal to go the distance.

Liu Forced to Play in the WTA 125 Series
While Liu did make it to the second round of the Poland Open where she was routed by the world number one Iga Swiatek, she has been forced to feature on the WTA 125 circuit instead of playing the WTA 1000 qualifiers.
Liu was shocked in the very first round of the Stanford Open there but in the week leading up to the US Open she looks to have got some of her rhythm back.
Playing in the Chicago Open, another of the WTA 125 events, Liu has got past three opponents to make it to the semifinals at the time of writing. Whether or not she goes further into the tournament is one thing but more vitally it remains to be seen if that helps or hinders her.
After all, while it’s always good to take some momentum into a tournament as big as the US Open, she has would be playing till late in the previous week and that could be a cause for concern. Something that happened to Samsonova too switching between Montreal and Cincinnati.
Either ways, she starts a huge second favourite at 4/1 (with bet365).
