World no. 29 Borna Coric needed just an hour and 22 minutes to dispatch Juan Manuel Cerundolo 6-3, 6-1 in the quarterfinal of the Winston-Salem Open on Thursday.
Coric struck seven aces and 19 winners, saved all three break points that he faced during the match and converted four of eight break points that he held to beat the world no. 100 and reach the semifinals of the tournament for the first time after falling in the quarterfinals in his two previous appearances in 2015 and 2017.
The Croatian would be relieved to have got the job done quickly after a close to three hour third round contest saw him battle past Michael Mmoh 6-4, 6-7 (3-7), 6-3.
The top seed had begun his campaign with a 6-2, 7-6 (7-2) victory over Rinky Hijikata in the second round.
A three-time tour level champion Coric is looking to reach a ninth ATP final of his career and a first of the season. He has been a semifinalist twice this year, in Madrid and Los Cabos, but failed to reach the title clash on both the occasions.

Baez Too Strong for Djere
After playing out back-to-back three set contests in the second and third rounds, Sebastian Baez handed Laslo Djere a straight sets rout on Thursday.
The one-hour-and-15 minutes contest saw the Argentine save all five break points in the first set. He then bagelled the Serbian in the second to win the match 6-3, 6-0 and extend his current win streak to eight matches.
Baez is playing in the first tournament since winning the Kitzbuel Open earlier this month.
The world no. 42 began his campaign by beating Daniel Elahi Galán 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 in the second round. He then defeated Aleksandar Vukic 6-4, 4-6, 6-4.
A three-time champion from five ATP finals, Baez is chasing a third ATP final of the season. In addition to winning in Kitzbuhel, he also won in Cordoba earlier this year.

Coric is the top seed but Baez is enjoying a hot streak. There is little to choose between the two. They will also meet in the first round of the U.S. Open, so it’s a perfect matchup to know each other’s game ahead of the final slam.
