Danielle Collins v Monica Puig Head to Head
The two women have met twice before, with their head-to-head record tied at one match apiece. Puig won their opening round match at the Indian Wells Open in 2017, but Collins got her revenge a year later in Miami.
Collins Enjoying a Breakthrough Year
World number 34 Collins has enjoyed something of a breakthrough year, after getting to the semi-finals of the Australian Open, never having even won a match at a Grand Slam event. On the way she put out three seeds, including Angelique Kerber, before eventually going out to Petra Kvitova.
She has since struggled to replicate that form, with her best showing coming in Indian Wells where she lost to Naomi Osaka in the third round.
After beating compatriot Madison Brengle in the first round, she had to work a bit harder to see off her next two opponents, Aliona Bolsova of Spain, and the Kaia Kanepi of Estonia, and can expect a tough match against Puig.
Puig, A Reigning Olympic Champion
Currently ranked 63 in the world, Puig, the reigning Olympic gold medallist from Rio, has shown nothing like the form that has helped her win two WTA Tour tiles in the past, and this will be her first quarter-final of the year so far, with her previous best being a round of 16 appearance in Acapulco.
Still she has now come through three matches in Charleston to give her a much needed boost in confidence. First, Sara Errani from Italy was dispatched for the loss of just one game, and then she put out the number thirteen seed Sofia Kenin in straight sets.
Most impressively of all, she went on to beat the number three seed Aryna Sabalenka on Thursday, again in straight sets, so may be playing her way back into form.
