Adrian Mannarino v Yosuke Watanuki Head to Head

Mannarino and Watanuki have never faced off in a competitive match before this.

Mannarino Coming off Cincinnati Quarterfinal

At 35 years of age, Mannarino is finding a second wind to his career as he continues to improve. And what that has meant is that the Frenchman is now ranked 23rd in the world, just one away from his career-best ranking – which he had achieved earlier this season.

Mannarino’s ranking has been achieved thanks to his deep runs at some of the hardcourt and grass competitions he has been a part of this season. On clay, he has been found wanting.

Take the example of the Newport Open which he went on to win after having reached the final in Mallorca, both of which came on grass.

In hardcourt competitions, Mannarino’s best performances have come at Miami where he reached the fourth round and more recently at the Cincinnati Masters where he was a quarterfinalist. More vitally, he was able to get the better of Felix Auger-Aliassime at the latter and Hubert Hurkacz at the former.

He starts off a heavy favourite here with bet365 offering 4/9 for his win.

Watanuki at Career-Best Ranking Too

He might be ranked 88th in the world but that’s Watanuki’s best ever ranking. Add the fact that he made it to the semifinal of the Stanford Challenger in the week leading up to the US Open and you have a player who could start the new week ranked 85th.

Watanuki had earlier made the second round Wimbledon after having entered the tournament as a lucky loser and the third round at Washington Open with a win over Auger-Aliassime too (just like Mannarino!)

Here’s a catch though.

Watanuki was forced to withdraw from his Stanford Challenger semifinal, which begs the question if he is fully fit. It could also be to help him prepare for the US Open for which he got a direct entry for the first time following the withdrawal of Roberto Bautista-Agut.

He starts off a 9/5 favourite (with bet365) in this one.

Mannarino v Watanuki Prediction and Tip

Mannarino can be expected to win this, especially now that there could be question-marks over his opponent’s fitness. Might see a fourth set though.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Mannarino to win: 4/9 (with bet365)
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Mannarino to win AND Both players to win a set: 7/5 (with bet365)
