Elina Svitolina, World No. 26, joined the 2023 tour after a long maternity break. Since her return, the Ukrainian has performed superbly – playing as if she was never away.
Of course, it took a few weeks for Svitolina to find her bearings as she fell rather early in ITF and WTA events in April-March. Things turned around for her in Saint-Malo when she made it to the semifinals, followed by a title run in the Strasbourg International.
Then came the big events in Paris and Wimbledon, where Elina made it to the closing rounds. In the two majors, she reached the quarterfinal and semifinal, respectively.
In recent weeks, Svitolina featured in the Citi Open, where she was a quarterfinalist but then fell early in the Canadian Open to Danielle Collins and withdrew from the Cincinnati Masters.
All in all, the 28-year-old has 19 wins to 11 losses with a little over a million dollars in prize money. Moreover, in her last two appearances at the Flushing Meadows, she has made it to the quarterfinals at the very least.

Friedsam Out of Practice
Germany’s Anna-Lena Friedsam is coming off a month-long pause from the WTA Tour. Her last tournament was the Contrexeville Challenger, where she fell in the quarters to Tereza Martincova.
Her record is now at 20-16; the current #88 has had a rather mediocre season.
Most of her recent results comprise early-round losses. The only time Friedsam experienced some semblance of momentum was early in the year.
Back then, Anna’s noticeable result was reaching the quarterfinal and the doubles final in the Linz Open and the final eight in Austin.
Apart from this, she made it to the main draw of many big events as a qualifier but couldn’t quite make it further.
