Ben Shelton v Pedro Cachin Head to Head

Shelton and Cachin have never faced off in a competitive match before this.

Shelton Attempting to Replicate What He Did at Australian Open

A quarterfinalist at the Australian Open, Shelton had surprised the world of tennis with his performance in that tournament as a 20-year-old.

In more recent times, however, Shelton has failed to get going. Or at least he hasn’t been able to recapture the kind of rhythm that had been on display in the season’s opening Grand Slam.

Take the example of the North American hardcourt swing itself. In the four tournaments he has played so far, leading up to the US Open, Shelton has won a mere two matches.

Those wins came in the opening rounds of the Canadian Masters and Cincinnati Masters, after Shelton had been dumped out in the first round at Atlanta and Washington.

He will now hope to continue with winning at least the openers, having never done that before at the US Open in his short career so far. Shelton has the advantage of being up against a player who is more of a clay-courter and the American is a huge favourite at 1/5 (with bet365) to win this.

Cachin 1-5 in Hardcourt Competitions This Year

Cachin is well known for his performances on clay. So much so that all 16 of his tennis titles have come on clay, including his maiden ATP win earlier this season.

That was at the Gstaad Open following his opening round exit at Wimbledon – another indicator of the difference between the performances on clay and elsewhere.

His showing in hardcourt competitions has been no better. Cachin started off the season with three successive first round defeats and has won just one match from his six matches on this surface in 2023.

Making things even more difficult for Cachin is his decision not to play in any such tournament in the lead-up to the US Open, missing an entire array of hardcourt tournaments in North America.

Which is why it’s no surprise the bookmakers have him pegged at 4/1 (with bet365) to cause an upset.

Shelton v Cachin Prediction and Tip

Shelton should have no difficulties notching up his maiden US Open win here and could even do that in three sets.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Over 35.5 games in the match: 4/5 (with bet365)
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Shelton to win in straight sets: 5/4 (with bet365)
