Shimabukuro Qualifies Confidently

Sho Shimabukuro had to play the qualifiers to find a place in the main draw of the US Open, but it proved no problem. The Japanese player got it done by winning two matches in straight sets and then adding an upset win in the final round.

He took on Liam Broady and bested him 6-4, 3-6, 6-3. It’s been a good year for Shimabukuro, who has been playing solid tennis for a while. His overall score this year is 34 wins and 19 losses. It’s 18-13 on hard courts, which is still pretty good.

This year was the first time he took part in the US Open, and it will be his first main draw appearance. The opponent is a fellow qualifier who is a good tennis player, arguably the better talent overall, but also a player that is prone to all sorts of shenanigans on the court.

He’ll have chances, and a more serious approach than that of his opponent might be enough to get it done.

Gaston Barely Pulls Thorugh

Hugo Gaston was on the verge of losing pretty much all of his qualifying matches. He ultimately won all of them in three sets, but it wasn’t a showing that would leave many impressed.

Gaston earns most of his money on clay, but he’s capable of playing doo tennis on hard courts. He’s done it in the past, but his casual approach to tennis tends to get him into trouble quite often. The year has been okay with a 30-21 record.

He looked better than his record at times but also worse as it remains a mystery what you might get from him. This one will be tough because he’s facing a player who will apply pressure from the get-go.

If he handles that well, then he can win, but if he crumbles, it’s going to be game over. He’ll need to be way more serious than in the qualifiers, though.

Shimabukuro v Gaston Prediction and Tip

I think Shimabukuro is closer to winning, but Gaston might be the better player overall. Still, in this spot I’ll back the Japanese player.

Tips:

  • Moderate Risk Tip: Shimabukuro to win: 5/6 (with bet365)
