Max Purcell v Christopher O’Connell Head to Head
There have been no previous encounters on the ATP Tour.
The fellow countrymen have likely played away from the tour on many occasions and should be familiar with each other’s game styles.

Purcell With Impressive Victories Recently
At the start of 2023, Purcell was predominantly known for his success on the doubles court; his world ranking was 220 and he was a regular on the singles Challenger Tour.
After surging up the rankings, Purcell now sits at world number 47 and has recently been competing in the main draw at ATP Tour events.
In the last month on the North American hard courts, Purcell has defeated Felix Auger-Aliassime, Stan Wawrinka and Talon Griekspoor all in straight sets.
He beat Casper Rudd in 3 sets and took world number 1, Carlos Alcaraz, to a decider in the quarter finals of the Masters 1000 event in Cincinnati.
On Wednesday, he lost to Jiri Lehecka in the quarter finals of the Winston-Salem Open. However, losing a few days prior to Grand Slams, often proves to be advantageous as it allows sufficient time to travel and prepare ahead of the first round.
Purcell’s recent victories should have boosted his confidence and stand him in good stead for this US Open encounter.

O’Connell Has Had Little Hard Court Preparation
O’Connell’s season has been steady with no major fluctuations to his world ranking.
He has struggled to string together main draw wins and perhaps worryingly has a 3-6 win-loss record on hard courts this year.
Many of his successes this season were seen in the earlier stages of the year.
He showed some good form on the Middle Eastern hard courts, with wins over Roberto Bautista Agut and Emil Ruusuvuori. A month later, he beat Ugo Humbert and Alexander Zverev on clay.
O’Connell’s most recent and significant achievement came at Wimbledon, where he reached the third round before losing to Christopher Eubanks in three tie break sets.
His US swing has only consisted of the qualifiers for the Canadian and Cincinnati Masters Events; where he failed to progress through to the main draws.
A lack of hard court match practice in the last month is of stark contrast to his compatriot and may prove costly in this instance.
Purcell v O’Connell Prediction and Tip
Purcell is in form and should prevail in this encounter. I expect O’Connell to raise his level and could easily take a set or two.
