McDonald Holds Off Auger-Aliassime

World no. 40 Mackenzie McDonald has enjoyed some good form recently and the American continued that in the first round of the US Open on Monday with a four-set win over 15th seed Felix Auger-Aliassime.

McDonald, who reached a maiden Masters 1000 quarterfinal in Toronto and also produced his best result in Cincinnati with a third round finish, needed close to three-and-a-half hours to dispatch the Canadian 7-6 (7-5), 4-6, 6-1, 6-4.

Auger-Aliassime, who is now 14-15 this season following a 60-win season last year, double faulted 11 times in the match in comparison to just one from McDonald.

The 28-year-old American saved 12 of 13 break points during the match and converted 3 of 8 to reach the second round for just the second time at the US Open in what is his sixth attempt. Can he now pick up a win inn the second round and make his round of 32 debut at Flushing Meadows?

He has already improved to 27-21 this season and given his form on hard courts, it looks likely that he will go past the second round this year.

Gojo Races Past Dellien

The Croatian served 13 aces, struck 30 winners, made just 21 unforced errors and did not double fault in the entire match.

Gojo had beaten Hamad Medjedovic in a three-set first qualifying round, before ousting Adrian Andreev and Tomas Machac in straight sets in the next two qualifying rounds.

The 25-year-old world no. 105 is 6-5 at the tour level and 37-23 overall, which includes two runner-up finishes at the Challenger level. Having registered his first win in the New York major, can he now build on the start?
