The world number nine was on court for a mere hour and 21 minutes to grab a 6-2, 6-1, 6-2 victory over his fellow American opponent and seal his place in the second round here. This followed an opening exit at the US Open last season.
The one-sided nature of the contest can be seen from the manner in which the Atlanta Open and Delray Beach Open title winner this year broke Johnson six times in the encounter, while not facing a single break-point in return.
Slamming 10 aces, Fritz hit 34 winners and had a mere 10 unforced errors to his name while his opponent had corresponding figures of 12 and 27 respectively. That big a discrepancy made the gap between the two players even more pronounced.

Varillas Surprise for Kecmanovic
Known for his performances on clay, Varillas had come into the US Open on back of no hardcourt main draw wins at the highest level this season. In fact, Varillas’ career record in hardcourt competitions reads a 1-7 on win-loss.
Which is why it was no surprise she started out a distant 37/10 underdog (with bet365) to win his opener against Miomir Kecmanovic.
Kecmanovic also loves his time on clay but he is no mug in hardcourt competitions with a finals appearance at the Delray Beach this year already under his belt.
Which is why when Kecmanovic clinched the first set 6-1, the writing was on the wall for Varillas.
Instead, the Peruvian player fought back to register the second hardcourt win of his career in a match lasting three hours and 14 minutes. Rather interestingly, both players dropped their serve six times but it was Varillas who clinched it at the right times, paving the way to his win.
