After four consecutive first round exits in the last four years, Laslo Djere is back in the second round of the US Open for the second time in his career.

The Serbian, world no. 38, has hot good form recently and he carried that to the final slam of the year, winning his first round match against American Brandon Nakashima in straight sets.

Broken twice in the match, Djere converted 5 of 5 break points to win the two hour and 22 minute contest 7-5, 6-4, 6-4.

Djere improved his season record to 29-20. He is 10-3 in his last 13 main draw matches at the tour level, which includes a runner-up finish in Hamburg, a semifinal appearance in Kitzbuhel and a quarterfinal finish in Winston-Salem.

Djere will now be hoping to reach the third round of a major for the fourth time in his career.

Gaston Wins Battle of Qualifiers

After battling past his opponents in the qualifying rounds, world no. 99 Hugo Gaston had a pretty straightforward outing in the first round on Monday as he knocked out fellow qualifier Sho Shimabukuro in under two hours.

The left-handed Frenchman saved 4 of 6 and converted 6 of 8 break points to beat the Japanese qualifier 6-2, 6-1, 7-6 (7-4).

Gaston had made it to the main draw with three consecutive come-from-behind wins in the qualifying rounds. He beat Antoine Escoffier 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 in the first qualifying round; Yuta Shimizu 4-6, 7-6 (8-6), 7-6 (8-6) in the second; and Lukáš Klein 1-6, 6-3, 6-1 in the final qualifying round.

Monday’s win improved his tour level record to 3-6 in 2023. Overall, he is 31-21, having won two Challenger titles from three finals, all on clay.

It is the first time he is in the second round at the US Open, can he keep the winning run going?
